Orange-Date Bars

8 oz box chopped dates (1 1/2 cups)

1 3/4 cups orange juice

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1 lb, 15 oz pouch oatmeal cookie mix

1/2 cup plus 2 T butter or margarine, melted

1/2 tsp powdered sugar

1. Heat oven to 350. Spray bottom and sides of 9″ square pan with cooking spray.

2. In a 2 quart saucepan, cook dates and orange juice over med-low heat 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in brown sugar; simmer 5 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in pecans. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl, stir cookie mix and butter with fork until mixture is crumbly. Press 2/3 of mixture in bottom of pan. Pour date mixture over crust. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture.

4. Bake 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely, about 2 hours. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into 5 rows by  4 rows. Store covered at room temperature.
